Angelina Jolie was born at 9:09 am PST on June 4, 1975 in Los
Angeles California to Jon Voight, Academy Award winning actor, and Marcheline
Bertrand, actress. She has one brother, James Haven. Angelina's beauty comes in
part from her Czechoslovakian, French and Native American heritage. Angelina
attended William O. Schaefer Elementary School in Tappan, New York. At 11 years
old, even though her childhood dream was to become a funeral director, Angelina
trained and performed at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where she was seen
in several stage productions. When she was 16, she graduated from Beverly Hills
High School. She went on to major in film at New York University.
Angelina began modeling when she was 14 and went on later to work as a
professional model in London, New York and Los Angeles. She also appeared in
several music videos and acted in five student films for the USC School of
Cinema, all of which were directed by her brother. In further pursuit of an
acting career, Jolie went on to study at the Met Theatre group in L.A.
Angelina's first major role came in Cyborg 2(1993). After
several more films, Angelina earned her first Golden Globe
Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Emmy nomination for her role in the TV
movie George Wallace (1997). Angelina earned her second Golden Globe
Award for Best Actress and another Emmy nomination for her starring role in the
HBO film Gia (1998). In 1999, Angelina starred in Girl,
Interrupted, earning her another Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Supporting
Actress. In 2001, Angelina performed her own stunts while filming Lara Croft:
Tomb Raider, a film that brought Angelina into action-flick stardom,
including her own action figures, video games, etc. Look for Angelina in Mr.
and Mrs. Smith (2005) and Love and Honor (2006).
One of Angelina's trademarks is the plethora of tattoos on her
body.
Inside of left wrist: "H" as a reference to the two people that
she is close to that have the letter H in their names: brother James Haven and
Timothy Hutton. After breaking up with Hutton, she now says it only refers to
her brother.
Left forearm: Roman numerals XIII.
Upper left inner arm: Originally the Japanese symbol for
courage, now covered with "A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages"-
Tennessee Williams' quote.
Right forearm: Originally an unknown symbol that both she and
Billy Bob Thornton had tattood, now covered by "Strength of will" in Arab.
Left shoulder and arm: Dragon, originally with Billy Bob
(removed) above it.
Left shoulder blade: Originally Japanese symbol for death, now
covered by a prayer of protection for her and her family written in Buddhist
Sanskrit in honor of her son's history.
Base of neck: "know your rights."
Lower Belly: "Quod me nutrit me destruit"- Latin for "What
nourishes me also destroys me."
Lower right front hip: Originally a black dragon with a blue
tongue, now covered with a large black cross.
Lower back: Large tiger with a dragon and two tribal symbols
below it. A blue window is also located between the tribal symbols because she
says that no matter where she is at any point in her life she always finds
herself looking out a window wishing to be somewhere else.
Pubic area: "Billy Bob."
On August 27, 2001, Angelina Jolie was appointed Goodwill
Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva,
Switzerland after her visits to Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Pakistan. In May
2002, in her role as goodwill ambassador, Angelina visited Tham Hin refugee camp
to check on conditions of 9,000 refugees from bordering Myanmar.
Angelina Jolie's first marriage was to actor Jonny Lee Miller,
who she met when filming Hackers (1995), from March 28, 1996 to February
3, 1999. When she married Miller, she wore black leather pants and a white
shirt, across the back of which she painted Jonny Lee in her own blood. On May
5, 2000, Angelina eloped with Billy Bob Thornton. In March 2002, while shooting
Beyond Borders (2003) in Africa, Angelina Jolie adopted a Cambodian baby
boy now named Maddox Chivan Thornton Jolie (b. August 5, 2001). Jolie and
Thornton divorced on May 27, 2003. Angelina is reportedly planning to give up
her acting career to settle in England with her son and be a full-time mother.
She has recently been linked romantically to Brad Pitt, and has adopted an African orphan girl and named her Zahara.
