Corrosion of Conformity started as a hardcore punk band in the 1980s in Raleigh, North Carolina (later moving to Houston, Texas). In common with many other exponents of the genre, COC gravitated towards a more metal sound, by the 1990s becoming essentially a heavy metal band. This led to more mainstream acceptance, gained particularly through their big break, opening for Metallica. In recent years, COC now exhibit a sound which leans towards stoner rock though still keeping their southern metal sound.
